Just Say No to Remote Controlled Aircraft!

In response to the Germanwings suicide/mass murder, the German aircraft control authority wants remote controlled aircraft.

Thus reports Reuters: “German air controllers urge remote control of planes after crash.”

The German air traffic control authority has urged the aviation industry to develop technology that ground staff could use in an emergency to take remote command of a plane, which could help prevent a repeat of a Germanwings crash last month.

Investigators believe that co-pilot Andreas Lubitz locked his captain out of the cockpit and deliberately crashed the Germanwings plane into a French mountainside on March 24, killing all 150 people onboard.

“We have to think past today’s technology,” Klaus Dieter Scheurle, head of the Deutsche Flugsicherung air traffic control authority, said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Such a system could be used in an emergency on the ground to take remote control of a passenger plane and safely land it, he said.

I would rather be at the mercy of the incredibly rare lunatic in the cockpit than a potential hacker or nefarious official somewhere on the ground who could murder us all without sacrificing his own life.

Put three pilots back in the cockpit before you put me at the mercy of some sociopath in high office who needs a “crisis” to move the public to accept his plan for more “homeland security.” History shows that far, far more people have suffered from the actions of rogue government officials in fancy suits and overdone uniforms, than from lone-wolf terrorists. I’ll go with the statistics on this one. Government remote controlled airplanes? No, thank you!

Yes, I fear a false-flag—Operation Northwoods, anyone?—more than I fear a depressed or jihadi pilot.

What about you?

(Editor’s note: Here’s the pilot episode for Chris Carter’s attempted spin-off series from the X-Files, The Lone Gunmen. Note that it aired before 9-11. I’ve seen interviews with one of the actors and it seems to be a coincidence that demonstrates that people should have known the World Trade Center would be a target and that planes would be used as bombs. But I put it here just to illustrate Bob’s point about the dangers of remote controlled aircraft.)
